Fun, Easy, and Delicious Baking Projects For Kids

Baking projects for kids
What’s even better than keeping your kids occupied with fun projects? Projects that result in sweet treats that you and your family can eat, of course! These four afterschool baking projects are fun, delicious ways to help pass time during a slower weekend, rainy day, or afterschool boredom. It’s also a great way to bond, spend quality time together, and (hopefully) instill a lifelong love of baking! Reminder: Always make sure to supervise your kids’ baking projects. Even though these recipes are tailored to be kid-friendly, you’ll still want to be there to lend a hand when it comes to any chopping, electric mixing, or oven duties. You’ll probably also want to keep an eye on the uncooked batter – as delicious as they might be, raw eggs and flour can be bad news for your little ones’ stomachs!

Truffles

Chocolate truffles are an excellent no-bake option for sweet treats when you just can’t be bothered to turn on the oven. All you’ll really need is your kids’ favorite kind of chocolate and some heavy cream, but you can always add in some fun extra toppings like nuts, sprinkles, or cocoa powder for even more richness. Then just melt the ingredients together in a pot, divide and roll into single servings, and (this is the hardest part) let them cool before eating.

Cake pops

Cake pops are a fun way to eat more cake, and they’re even more fun to make! Simply mix and bake their favorite cake flavor (boxed is fine), crumble and combine with their favorite frosting flavor, then roll into bite-sized portions. Stick a lollipop stick into them, cover with ganache or melted chocolate, and let harden in the fridge before eating.

Brownies

Brownies are the ultimate chocolate lovers’ treat, and they’re a great way to introduce your kids to baking basics. For a simple recipe, you’ll need flour, cocoa powder, butter, eggs, sugar, and baking powder (and maybe some chocolate chips for even more richness). It’s an easy mix to whip together and pour into a baking pan, making it an excellent project for your kids.

Peanut butter cookies

Decadent peanut butter cookies only require three basic ingredients to make! Mix up some peanut butter, eggs, and sugar, then portion the dough into individual cookies and let your kids add the classic criss crossed fork stamp on top of the cookies to flatten before popping them in the oven.

Sugar cookies

Half the fun of sugar cookies is eating them -- the other half is using fun cookie cutters to make them! A simple sugar cookie recipe just needs flour, sugar, baking powder, vanilla extract, butter, eggs, and a dash of salt. You can also make a simple frosting with powdered sugar and milk (just make sure your kids don’t eat it all before they can be added to the cookies!).

Peanut butter pie

A simple peanut butter pie is another easy recipe that doesn’t require any baking. All your kids will have to do is whip together peanut butter, sugar, whipped cream, and cream cheese, then pour into a premade pie crust and cool. They can also make their own homemade crust by mixing crushed Oreos or graham crackers with melted butter and pressing the mixture into a pie pan.

Lemon bars

If your kids want to dive into a baking project but aren’t a fan of heavy flavors like chocolate or peanut butter, try making bright, tangy lemon bars instead! Make a crust by combining flour, butter, and sugar, then top with a refreshing filling with eggs, flour, sugar, baking powder, and real lemon juice and lemon zest. These baking projects are a great way for your kids to learn their way around the kitchen and make delicious treats that everyone in your house can enjoy!
